hi everyone.

something that even the basic of people get to grips with before anything else in the linux world, seems to be this 'make' and 'make install'. you practically have to do it to everything that needs installing. However, i never understood this, and now i guess i need filling in a little bit.
whenever i type make, it says *** no targets, stop ***

or to the equivalent.

i run slackware 7.2, and maybe it's different??

please, if anyone can help. i'd be most greatful.

Where are you when you get that? Sounds like there's no Makefile.

Did you try to run ./configure first?

Also, Slackware, from what I understand (never run Slack), does involve compiling most everything (which is what make actually does), but other Linux distros have different methods for obtaining packages, like the RPM format created by Red Hat (and now used by other distros also).

There's also something called alien ( that will supposedly change one package format to another. I've never used it though. Matt

If I can help, I will.

YEAH, USED RPM BEFORE, AND I DO HAVE THE MAKEFILES IN THE FOLDER.

MAYBE I NEED TO DO $ . make
# . make installation

THIS LOOK BETTER? (#=ROOT / $=USER)

THANKS.

This is probably a dumb question but do you have an compiler installed?

GCC. (hmmm - i assume:))
i'll check that, but yeah, i presume so with it saying the stop, no targets thing. (?)
hmmm. i'll check it when i get home tonight, he he. i will feel a right muppet if this is the problem :)
