Every document I open in Word 2003 opens with Markups visible. This is a pain. How can I get Word to open files without Markups visible? Many times I open a document just to print it and forget to change the view and get garbage output.

Are you saying it opens with the Markups toolbar visible? If so, you could start a startup check, and if it is visible, turn it off.

If Application.CommandBars.Item("Reviewing").Visible = False Then
Application.CommandBars.Item("Reviewing").Visible = True
End If

Or do you want to turn the display of revisions off?

ActiveDocument.ActiveWindow.View _
.ShowRevisionsAndComments =False

Dreamboat - that's an informative link, but does not address my problem.

Fumei - I don't mind the toolbar

My problem was that every document with changes would open with the document shifted to the left and the darn balloons visible.

I fixed it by in the Markup Toolbar, inside the Show pulldown, changing Balloons to Never.

IFRs,

Did you ever get an answer to stop 2003 every 2003 document with changes from opening with Markups visable?

We have the same issue.

At present, we're trying the outlook change by dreamboat to see if that is the heart of the issue as the user is unclear if it happends only for edited Word docs passed through email or for all Word docs opened on the shared directories.

Thanks, LMCAM

I think it is the Markup Toolbar.
Try Show / Balloons / Never
