You would have something like the following in /etc/modules.conf :
alias char-major-14 ac97_codec
alias sound ac97_codec
post-install ac97_codec modprobe "-k" via82cxxx_audio
However, there was a bug on the via audio driver in some kernels, for example 2.4.12 . So, you may need a patch or a newer kernel. The alternative would be to use alsa -->
