I am running SMS 2003 and I am looking for an easy way to create a collection from a list of IP addresses that I have. Does anyone know of such a way?

Thanks

Use a exe called makecoll.exe from the old MS backoffice 4.5 resource kit.....if you can find it ;)

That converts ip addresses or netbios names in a text file to collections and works with 2003 (havent tried it on 2003 but used it many times on 2.0

You can always setup a direct membership or query rule within the collection. Create a collection called "IPs" select properties and membership rules. Create a query that enumerates all Ip's in your environment, or all IP's similar to your list. Then simply "Check" all the systems you want in your collection.

Good Luck.

tbrennans, thanks for your response but that seems to be a very useful tool but I can't find it anywhere. I do not have access to the old MS backoffice 4.5 resource kit. I tried to locate the resource kit when we were using SMS 2.0 and came up empty. I was hoping with 2003 there would be another way of locating the makecoll.exe tool other than the ancient resource kit. Do you know of any other why to get the makecoll.exe tool?

Karactur, I also appreciate as well but would you mind going into a little more detail? The process you describe does sound like a little more work than I was anticipating since I would still have to manually select each system. Also unless I am misunderstanding you when using the direct membership rule wizard at the point where you are given the option to “check” the returned results it always displays the resources by the NetBIOS name. is there anyway to have it display the IPs that you know of?

Thx again
