Hello everybody. I was wondering if anyone can possibly get me out of the hole. I have been trying very hard setting up an Linux mail server for the past 2 days using sendmail. I that the only application I need or do I need others like IMAP!

Can anyone shread some light to giving me a tutorial one how i can approach this. Thanks and bless you all!!

If you want to access your mail from other, non-sendmail/*nix machines, you will need a POP3 or IMAP server setup on your mail server to allow your users to get their mail off the mail server.

Qpopper is a good, easy to set up POP3 server and Cyrus is a good IMAP server, although its kind of a pain to set up.

Hope this helps,
Paul

if you have installed a linux machine then by default you have all the software you will ever need for using it as a mal server. RedHat Linux has sendmail as smtp server and has both pop3 as well as imap server installed.

Hello, thanks for the quick responses. Actually I would probably also need help on how to set up a configuration file so that I can start testing the email server. I feel the configuration files are quick complex to set up. Anyone can help??

qpopper works like a champ! Here's a copy of my
/etc/xinetd.d/pop3 config for qpopper. Note, the actual binary is called popper and it's in the /usr/sbin directory.

service pop3
{
disable = no
socket_type = stream
protocol = tcp
wait = no
user = root
server = /usr/sbin/popper
server_args = qpopper -s
port = 110
}

Keep in mind that this is a basic config. Hope this helps!
