My PC had started to die can you look at these symptoms and give me your opinion.
Running xp Pro
All Patches Installed and anti virus up to date
Went to install office 2000 and it constantly hanged mid installation
Anti virus and firewall turned off still the same
Downloaded Office install cleaner to clean off failed installations that too crashed during install.
Went to system recovery. That too crashed. Help!
Cheers

I've never seen this happen before. is it possible the Office CD(s) is/are damaged?

Thanks but office is not installed and no previous versions exist. the problems are getting worse. I tried to run xp's system restore but system restore crashes when a restore point is being made and will not restore and existing point. all exisitng points disappeared an hour ago. Ive run adaware and norton av and it can find nothing wrong. Nor can windoctor. Disk doctor finds some security things wrong but restarts to fix them, but never does. i have deleted the other account on this machine to make me the sole owner. Still no change. does anyone have any ideas?

What does the Event Viewer say as for the reasons for your "crash."

It is impossible to help without the information that your Event Logs contain.

Hanging application rstrui.exe, version 5.1.2600.1106, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

The system restore index files are corrupt, is the most likely reason.

Turn off System Restore. Reboot. Restart System Restore.

Either:

. right-click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, and disable System Restore from the options there;

. Start, Accessories, System, System Restore, and turn it off there

. Start, Help and Support, Support Tools, System Restore, and turn it off there.

But reboot to clean all existing restore points. It is difficult to figure whether the problem started with your aborted install of Office, and pre-existed, but it is certainly clear that System Restore cannot help you at the moment.

Now try the Office installation again, and write down any specific errors.

Some general things to try.

These will check out your RAM for any possible errors.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

After putting my machine back to factory settings and losing all my data I found the culprit to be Noton firewall 2004. It seems it must of been stopping services etc at startup as it was taking a while to boot. Thank you for all your posts and time.
