why does my 0x32 go into maintenance mode when i attempt to add a 016 module via 6 port fiber card?

This can be an indication that the hardware configuration is unsupported.

Is there an alarm displayed on the alarm set? By default, the alarm set is the set connected to port 101.

I understand that you are trying to add a 0x16 SM to a 0x32 MICS. Did you add the 6-port expansion cartridge at the same time? Is so, where did you put the cartridge? Was there any other cartridge installed on the system before you tried to add the SM?

Yes, I added it at the same time. there was a 2 port card already in the system in slot 2, feeding the first two 0x16's, so I replaced it with a 6 port

Replacing a 2-port expansion cartridge with a 6-port expansion cartridge is an upgrade, so it shouldn't be a problem. Just to make sure, you completely removed the old cartridge and you installed the new cartridge in slot 2, right?

If the system doesn't see the 6-port expansion cartridge, it thinks it's being downgraded. If it is the case, the alarm set prompts for a cold restart.

You need to narrow down the problem. Here are a few suggestion.

First, check that the expansion cartridge is properly installed:

[ol 1]
[li]Power down.[/li]
[li]Seat the 6-port expansion cartridge properly.[/li]
[li]Power up.[/li]
[/ol]

Second, check that the expansion cartridge isn't defective:

[ol 1]
[li]Power down.[/li]
[li]Replace the 6-port expansion cartridge with another 6-port expansion cartridge.[/li]
[li]Power up.[/li]
[/ol]

Third, check that the connector isn't defective:

[ol 1]
[li]Power down.[/li]
[li]Replace the 6-port expansion cartridge with the initial 2-port expansion cartridge.[/li]
[li]Power up.[/li]
[/ol]

Let us know what you get.

I don't have another 6 port as of this time, hoever, I did see light coming through the fiber. I had to put the 2 port back in so as to get the customer back in busness. Once i did that the system was fine. So, even if there is light coming from the 6 port card, could it still be bad?

I am afraid so.

At this point, trying a different 6-port expansion cartridge is the best thing you can do.
