We have deleted several mailboxes over the months and deleted the accounts, but still see
the users' name/mailboxes listed.
Also when we right click on any user (existing or not) in the system manager,
under All Tasks, the mailbox cleanup is Greyed out.

What would cause this ??

we really want to cleanup our Exch. db

thanks gang !!

What was your steps in deleting these users. You should first right click on the users account, select Exchange Tasks and delete the Mailbox then delete the user. Then go to the Mailbox store purge the Mailbox and/or run the Mailbox Cleanup tool.

when we go into Mailbox Store/Mailboxes and right click any user, the Purge is greyed out.

Also, where is the "mailbbox cleanup tool" listed ??
thanks

Right click on your store in SM and you'll see the cleanup agent. Run that, then the mailboxes you've deleted will show up with a red mark, and you can delete them.

Under
Admin group\first admin group\Servers\ServerName\FIrst storage group\Mailbox store

when we Right click on Mailbox Store, there is NO cleanup agent

Sorry, right click on "Mailboxes" under your store.

lander,
what will that do though ?? I dont want to clean up all users, just the ones we deleted that are gone from the company.

Also, i found that our Deleted items mailbox, was/is set to 30 days, so thats prob. why there still showing.

Why though is the "Purge" option greyed out from all user mailboxes (Under store) right panel ??

thanks I appreciate it.

The purge option is grayed out becuause those mailboxes are still in use. You will not have the option to purge a mailbox if it is still in use. Running the mailbox cleanup will not affect your users. Only when you have deleted the user and mailbox, run the cleanup agent then you will see your user mailboxes with a red X, you can then right click on those mailboxes and select Purge.

You may also want to buy a good book on Exchange. I use the Administrators Pocket Consultant for reference all the time still.

2cornot2c,

only thing is, some mailboxes that are not in use(user account has been deleted) that mailbox is still greyed out so you cannot purge that either.
Does it have to do w/ the Mailbox retention on the Mailbox Store that is typically set to 30 days ??

thanks gang

When you deleted the user account, did you check the box to delete the mailbox as well? If the mailbox has been marked for deletetion, it will show up as such after you run the Cleanup Agent. The retention setting has nothing to do with it.

i have to check w/ the admin who did it but apparently not
:)

Thanks Lander !

What you could try is recreate the user account and then reconnect the mailbox that you are having problems with to the account. Once you create the user account, go to the users mailbox, right click and choose reconnect, select the user account that you created. Run the cleanup agent and the run the Receipient Update Service, one at a time.

Once it is working properly you can go throught the proper procedure to delete the mailbox. The rentention time has nothing to do with it. Once you have the mailbox reconnected, you can rightclick on the user account you created, select exchagne tasks and delete mailbox. Run the cleanup agent then purge the mailbox.

Also, check your Event Viewer for any mailbox problems. Usually, if there are problems with a users mailbox you will see it in the Event Viewer.

Thanks Gang !!!!

apparently, were also still running Mixed mode, not native.
i tried to switch, but its greyed out. I read about removing SRS ??
how is that done?
