I'm new to Exchange and I'm looking over our system (5.5) and I noticed that in the MailBox Resources screen, the Mailbox and Windows NT Accounts don't always match. Some Windows NT Accounts are 'assigned' to multiple mailboxes. Like this:

Mailbox Windows NT Account
BobR Server1\BillS
BillS Server1\BillS
FrankT Server1\Bills
JaneD Server1\JaneD
MaryR Server1\BillS and so on...

But there is nothing in their user profiles that link them to the account shown. In the profile it clearly show BobR to be linked to Server1\BobR, etc.

And in the Logon Screen I see a similar situation. It doesn't seem to be causing any problems, but it is a bit confusing. I'm guessing that it has something to do with the way the user accounts were created - typically by copying an existing user to match permissions, groups etc.

I was hoping one of you gurus could satisfy my curiosity. Thanks!

This sort of thing should only be done if the original owner of the mailbox has left the organization and another user was given access to the mailbox to access company-relevant messages. I would check out all instances to ensure users do not have access to mailboxes they shouldn't - it's too easy for unscrupulous people to send innapropriate messages that look like they're coming from someone they're not.

Frequently on our Exchange 5.5 server, under mailbox resources - the NT a/c associated with many of the mailboxes is often the ADMINISTRATOR. The ADMIN isn't actually the primary account associated with these mailboxes but my understanding is during the course of the "backup" procedure instigated by admin they take ownership of each mailbox temporarily. Is BillS a domain admin on your domain?? Long shot..
