I have a mail server that I would like everyone in my organization to be able to use as their smtp mail server even when popping from their home ISP's however I do not want to open up my mail server to various malicious hack attempts. At this time when someone tries to send mail from the home ISP they get a "relaying denied" error message.
anyhelp would be appreciated.
There's not going to be a lot you can do about this, I'm afraid. The "Relaying Denied" message is coming from the user's own ISP. This is an anti-spam security measure that is probably in use by almost every ISP in the world. (You can tell the ones that don't do it - they're named on one of the "From " lines in the e-mail header of all the spam you receive ;^)

I can only think of two ways around this:

1.) Bite the bullet, secure the server, and link up to the 'net...
2.) Provide users with dial-in access to the server that they can use when they need to send/receive corporate e-mail.
To make things simple, just ask your users to use their ISP's SMTP server to send mail. There is no point to send mails from their ISP's network through your mail server.

This is a really old thread. Imagine my surprise to see this. Your input is valid enough and is in fact what we do now. However, when our users go out of town with their laptops, they have to continually change the SMTP server to mindsprings SMTP server (we use mindspring for our remote users on the road). We were trying to eliminate the need to do this. Since this post we have employed a web based email package that solves the problem.

Thanks for the post.
