Whilst trying to retrieve email on a customers machine, the error that the mail host cannot be found is received. All email details are correct, server, user name, password etc. Access to the internet is possible as is browsing the web. Have tried to telnet into mail server to no avail. The mail server is up and running as tested by another machine. Have uninstalled and reinstalled dialup networking. Have uninstalled and reinstalled mail program, still same result. Technet only supply the obvious answers like check connection/password ETC. The mail program being used is Outlook 2000 however the same results are received whilst using Outlook Express which leads me to believe that this problem is not program specific. This one has me baffled, any help would be greatly received.

have you called the ISP to confirm SMTP and POP3 settings which should be put in outlook ? where is the mail server, is it a company owned one, once connected to the client PC on the net try pinging the IP address of the server ( from the server type ipconfig to find out IP address). if you can ping it then thats a good sign and you need to look further at settings at both ends.

Yup, as I said all details are correct. I have pinged the mail server from another computer with success however although I can ping other sites from the problem machine, I cannot ping the mail server??????
Now where did I put my hammer!!

thats interesting. at least now you know its the client PC with the problem. sounds like a TCP/IP issue, its not my forte so you will have to wait for more advice. have you tried uninstalling everytype of outlook then going again ? might be worth a shot
