I want to prevent mail from being bounced if the exchange server is disconnected. Are there any online services to act as a mail gateway and queue mail until the exchange server is online.
You could check with your ISP if they provide such services.
If yes, modify your public DNS MX-records according to add their SMTP relay server as second hop;
eg.
yourcompany.org MX Preference=10, mail exchanger=mail.yourcompany.org
yourcompany.org MX Preference=20, mail exchanger=mail.yourISP.org
the lowest MX preference is used first; if this one becomes unavailable, all SMTP servers send mail destined to your domain to the ISP's mail server. He should queue it there until your server becomes available again.
To be sure, check with their "relay policies", as I know some ISP's in Belgium who only keep mail for 3 days and then it is automatically deleted...
