Macine boots to basic desktop

Hi
Last night my son attempted to upgrade the video card drivers on his IBM tower running XPP and, on reboot the machine hung. After a power on reset it booted up with an error box 'Unable to load Profile, loading default Profile' (or words to that effect)to a very basic desktop with all settings, shortcuts, icons, etc gone.
I attempted to do a 'System Restore' to a previous date but the error and settings always return to this basic desktop. Can anyone advise us how to recover this 'Profile' to load a saved desktop with settings.

Thanks Greg - the info solved the problem - profile must have became corrupt when machine crashed
