My mac's finder got moved somware else and now when I start up my mac i get a floppy disk icon with a Bilking ? icon inside. Mine is a Qradra 650 running 8.1 on it.

Please help.

put CD in drive, reboot

thanks so it will be fixed just like that no problems. In all the years that I have worked on a mac I have never run into this.

it will boot the OS like normal from the cd, open the Hard Drive, move the finder to where it belongs, then remove the cd and restart. it should operate normaly from then on. I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every moment of it.

You may have to hold the 'C' key down to force the machine to boot from CD. If you can't fix it in 20 minutes call someone who can.

I have a similar problem. The error msg says to restart with extensions off. I try to do that and get a finder error. The main problem is that I don't have the Mac OS cd- I'm running 8.6 (downloaded and installed over 8.5)--knowing that Macs almost never screw up, I played around with some questionable extensions. The error says "Quicktime ..." but with ext.s off, finder error. Without the cd, I'm lost. Fixing PCs comes easy, but I don't know much about the Mac (got it used and it's in good shape)--I even booted to programmer's mode but I don't know what to tell it in order to make it boot up.
I think I'll likely have to get a Norton rescue disk some kind of recovery program if not the OS cd. Anyone got any ideas? -- the error message starts during the extension load up.

Assuming the startup disk you have is identical to the OS you are running onthe Quadra you may be able to simply boot from the CD-ROM (holding down the "C" key while starting up so the Mac looks for it's OS in the CD Drive rather than the Hard drive). On occasion, copying the Finder from the CD to the System Folder may not meet your need. Either way, fromthe startup CD you can reinstall the System Software. While you may lose some data you will heal your Qudra.

Are you getting the error message on boot?
Shalll I assume you are booting extensions off my holding down the SHIFT key???
When you say you "played around" with some extensions...are we talking about disabling them or tinkering with them in a resource editor like ResEdit??
Trying to get a grip on the problem before offering a bonehead solution:)

See if you can boot while holding the SPACE BAR and get into your extension manager. Use the base OS set (if you are able) and restart.

Additionally you can zap the PRAM (startup holding APPLE-OPTION-P-R for three chimes) and rebuild the desktop (simple release the P key after zapping the PRAM until you are prompted to rebuild)..

As for booting into Open Firmware -
Option-Apple-O-F
once you are in to the prompt try the following (case sensitive!)

reset-NVRAM
reset-all
<RETURN>
