We recently changed our office over from MAC's to PC's and our Pagemaker files now will not open. No one seems to know the proper extension to add to our pagemaker files... They appear in our files but we are not allowed to open them. We've done all of our Sunday bulletins in Pagemaker - and they have our scanned music... HELP .. would greatly appreciate your assistance in this matter. Thank you

Hi,

I'm not sure, but I think the suffix is *.pm6.
You just rename the files with the suffix. It is possible they will not open even when you change the name, so don't double click on them to open the file. Better is to open the program first and then there is the optionin the open dialog window to "open original" or "as a copy". Use the open as a copy possibility. This is because mac and pc's have a different way of writing afile to disk.Pc's use only one fork, Mac's use two forks.

Hello,
Additional info:
You may need to use the cross platform converter which you will find in your PageMaker folder.
This is a program provided which will convert the file.
Once you get a green check in the converter window for the files you want to convert, you are ready to start on the PC.
Good luck

I can guarantee from first-hand experience you that you will need to run the converter to open the files. I edited a small magazine a few years ago that was composed on PCs, but the firm that did our printing was all Macintosh. We had to run that converter every time we took files in to be printed. Macintosh files and Windows files are completely different and incompatible with each other. So once you open Pagemaker, you will need to go to Utilities/Plug-Ins/Publications Converter. Just follow the instructions.

One caveat -- this can take a long time. It's probably a lot faster now that processors and RAM have improved, but it took hours to do a 36-48 page magazine a few years ago. Also, the conversion process isn't perfect, or at least it didn't used to be. We always had to go back through the files and make a few manual adjustments to picture sizes, rule lines, type sizes, etc.

Hope this helps.

I transferred some files the other day onto a disk from my MAC and then placed the pagemaker disk into my PC. The only thing I had to do from there was to add the extension .p65 (for PageMaker 6.5) onto the end of the file name and it opened beautifully. Of course I was missing some MAC fonts and all, but I didn't seem to encounter any other problems.

Hi,

I work everyday on my Mac at home and on a Windows Compatible machine at work, and bring along my work on a ReWritable CD. I Have PageMaker 6.5 at home and PageMaker 6.5 at work and it's completly transparent wether I save, open, change things and re-save on neither plateform.
You must be on the same level to exchange (6.5 to 6.5) if not, you will have to find a way to upgrade (example: from 4.2 to 5, and from 5 to 6). This is what I have done the first time I transfered my work from one plateform to the other.
The extension is .p65

I've inherited a pile of miscellaneous information that needs to be organized and put into a retrievable format. I have many Pagemaker files that are from PM4 on Macintosh disks. I managed to find a way to get the Macintosh files onto my hard disk. I have Pagemaker 5 for Windows to work with. When I try to retrieve the PM4 files I get a message that I cannot convert platforms and versions at the same time. I need to find a way to convert the PM4 Macintosh files to PM4 Windows so they can be imported into PM5. Help would be appreciated.

You can only convert Mac files to PC files with the SAME VERSION of PM. Example, you can open version 6.5 files made on a Mac with 6.5 on PC (.p65), however, you cannot open Pagemaker 5.0 files on a Mac on vs 6.5 on a PC.

Version 5.0 extension = PM5
Version 6.5 extension = P65
Version 7.0 extension = PMD

You can rename a PMD to P65 without any problems in most cases. The 2 file types are identical unless advanced features of 7.0 were used. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
