I'm not sure in my experience I agree with the last comment. We produce a lot of CDs for a particular client and they have iMac computers running OSX and OS9.
We produce normal CD-Rs using Ahead Nero and use the autorun.inf file (as you've said). However, this works on all the Mac computers they've tried it on.
I wonder why they work on some Macs but not others. Do you have experience that they don't work? Also, what is "Toast"?
I want to make sure we're doing the best thing for Mac users as well as PC users - so I'd be interested in your reply.
autorun.inf is a Windows specific information file and nothing to do with either OS 9 or OS X. Are you sure the CD auto-started on Mac?!
Toast is (arguably) the best disk burning software around. Mac only, tough. With Toast you can create auto-start CD for Mac OS 9 (or any classic OS). However, the CD auto-start function is usually turned off at the user's machine - this is due to prevent an attack from a virus present once upon a time.
Basically, you don't have to worry about the auto-start on Mac. (You can't, anyway!) What you should do though, is to create a CD, which opens up a window upon insertion, and that window contains the file to double-click. Virtually all the CD-ROMs for Mac are built like this. In order to create such a CD you need to create a disk image, and that's where Toast comes as strong candidate as the best CD burning software - I don't think you can burn Mac/PC hybrid CD in this way using Nero.
I've never burnt a hybrid CD from PC so I won't be able to tell, but I heard that you could get a Toast-like software for PC too, such as "CDEveryWhere".
