Mac 7300/166 & cable modem! 1

I have a 7300/166 w/OS 8.5 installed and want to connect to the Internet via cable modem.

TCP/IP Settings are: IP - 195.34.149.251
Router(Gateway): 195.34.149.1
DNS 195.34.133.10, 195.34.133.11
Subnetmask 255.255.255.0

Above values to me seem correct, since they work with my Linux-Server.

Problem is, that I can´t connect at all - even can´t go out by
Since I´m quite new to MacOS, I guess that I´ve overseen some point.

Any suggestions welcome.

(Using MacOS 8.6)

Be sure TCP/IP control panel is set to ethernet, configured manually.

Other than that it looks good I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
 
Sorry where is the modem installed, is it on the linux which you are connected to, or are you using the same modem for both machines?
If you can't fix it in 20 minutes call someone who can.
 
Also 7300/166, but now a G3/500 with xlr8 card. Running OS 8.6 and connecting to Web via cable modem (part of tv/phone/net setup). TCP set to "ethernet" and configure using "DHCP server".
Any help?

Some thoughts here on the issues you mention with the cable modem connection. Try the obvious first I'd say. Perhaps unplug and replug the cable modem. A basic reset there.

As far as the Mac software and settings...
try this one...
Apple Menu | Control Panles | TCP/IP
Click the OPTIONS button in the lower right part of the window. If it's not there... got to EDIT and drop to User Mode picking the Advanced radio button..then click OPTIONS......Make Tcp/IP inactive...close out the tcp/ip control panel window and save when adked.

THEN go BACK in to the tcp/ip control panel and you will be autoprompted to make tcp/ip active. Go with Yes here and then close out the tcp/ip window saving.

See if you can conncet now.
We're basically resetting the tcp/ip setting and the cable modem should autoset the config.

How are you connected to the cable modem? You said there's a linux server on it as well. So I assume you are using a cable/dsl router? Generally just plugging up a hub with additional pc's will not work. The modem will only "talk" to a single hardware addresss (or IP address), unless it has routing capability built in. I also assume you are not using the same IP as the linux machine. Remember, you're unique... just like everyone else.

Cable modem seems to need resetting often. Works fine, but every now and again won't connect, TCP panel shows 169... and I have to turn it off and on again. Is this a general fault with cable modems? I shall have words with our provider.
 
To follow up on MacGeneral's suggestion ( <snip> THEN go BACK in to the tcp/ip control panel and you will be autoprompted to make tcp/ip active. Go with Yes here and then close out the tcp/ip window saving. <snip> ), I suggest that before closing the TCP/IP window you also UNcheck the box that says &quot;Load only when needed&quot;. That option was added when most Mac users had dialup connections and the thought was that if you didn't need Internet access, this would disconnect you to save on connection charges.

That shouldn't be an issue with an &quot;always-on&quot; connection - thus, no need for the box to be checked.
