M7310 one touch button programming - Voice Call vs. Intercom

First off...I am NOT a technical user of Nortel Products and work as the Business Operations Officer at a local American Red Cross chapter.

Some of our Nortel/Norstar/Meridain M7310 phones have BLF units attached to them. In order to have the BLF units work, it required us to program the phones' upper keys using the Intercom feature, which works beautifally for that need. We have also printed key cap fillers accordingly so that it is easy to figure out what extension is being used. However, our volunteers now use the programmed keys to actually CALL the extension via the intercom feature which requires the called station to pick up the handset or press the hands free mute button to answer the call. As the majority of our stations do not routinely answer incoming calls, they have their ringers turned down and do not realize when someone is calling them via the intercom feature. Management prefers that we use the intercom feature so that the speakers automatically turn on and no one has to be within reaching distance of the phone. This has been an ongoing discussion in our staff meetings. Most of the volunteers are not in the office on a regular enough basis to remember these things.

I have tried to program the buttons using the voice call button in place of the intercome button with no success. (Feature *2, voice call, then the button to be programmed) Is there something I am missing or doing wrong? Or is there no way to program the upper buttons on the M7310 with the voice call feature and extension for one button calling? We have just ordered additional BLF fields for those phones that do not already have them, and can see this becoming a larger issue than it already is.

A thought that also came to mind while typing this....if there is a way to program those keys with the voice call feature for one button calling, will the BLF units work correctly? Or will they only indicate when the extension is using the intercom?

Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone can give us. Am hoping to find a cure for a growing sore spot in the office.

Voice calling is always at least a two step process (vc button plus dss button) and there's no way around that (yet).

Thanks for your quick reply. Just making sure I understand...there is no way of programming the upper memory buttons to use voice call an extension number.

THANKS!!

Sure, you can program any of the upper buttons as either a voice call key or a dss button but you can't combine the two into one button. Once you've configured a button for vc and for your most often called co-workers you just press vc plus their dss button.
