Hi Folks,

Is there a FOLD able to translate from Meridian digital phones to multimode fibre? I've always been told that it's not possible as (a) the "B+d is not ISDN BRI standard and (b) on the 39xx phones it's a 2wire presentation.

I've used Flexilink Solos for BRI's before but not for digital phones.

We're having a new building put up next to a building with an 11c running 4.50 software and want about 30 digital and analogue extensions. It's about 50m total distance so there are no distance issues. Due to various restrictions it would preferable to use fibre rather than copper. There's enough space in the 11C for a couple of DLC's and enough spare FALC capacity.

One small consideration is that the phones in the new building require a new Symposium application and 2 display boards.

So if I'm having to upgrade for the Symposium and have to go to CS1k do I have ip phones or install a new CS1k in the new building and have a PRI between the switches?

So many options - so little time.

I'd appreciate your thoughts please.

i would add a fiber remote to the far end... we tie 15 buildings together here via fiber.. with either ipe's or opt style cab's on the far end..

The nice thing about fiber remotes is you don't have to upgrade every time a new Rls. comes out on the PBX.

You could also look at purchasing a T1/E1 Fiber Modem, I know Canoga Perkins makes them.

You might want to look at using a Nortel Remote Office setup, which consists of an RLC card for the switch and a 9150 1U box for the remote end. You can run up to 32 TDM phones off of them if you use the double-wide RLC card. Because the RLC card looks like a regular digital line card to the switch, upgrading to 5.x is not a problem. Note that the link between the RLC card and the remote 9150 is IP.

You will have to do some traffic engineering since the system out of the box can only do 8 simultaneous conversations, but this can be increased by adding DSP modules to both ends. I use quite a few of these to support branch offices on my metro fiber ring.

Many thanks for your replies and advice.

The fibre remote sounds a good idea but redundancy might be an issue.

I've got almost no experience on Call Centre stuff as I've mostly worked on networking.

Would I need to upgrade to CS1k for the Symposium? How does Symposium connect into the Meridian? Could I connect it to the fibre remote? Do the display boards connect to the Symposium?

Oh and the budget is (please don't laugh) 15k GBP!!!!

Many thanks for your comments.

The other thing to think about, if you use the fiber remote, you can also add analog cards to use with modems and fax machines etc. saving money on running additional phone lines in to the new building.

Mini carrier might work for you and be a cheaper solution. You will have to purchase a converter from T1 to Fiber at both ends and you can run up to 8 cards at the remote end.
