Ok my problem is, I had a clients pc that has got spiked, the m/b died and I have replaced the board but was just wondering what is the best way of installing all the system devices for the new board since the hdd still thinks that the old board is in there, this is a totally different board and I was wondering if there was anyway of totally getting rid of the old system configuration without reinstalling winblows? It is a windows 98 system ....

Windows 98 will find most if not all the devices and install them. Also, besure to load the new MB drivers if a CD came with it.

so you don't have to get rid of the old devices that are installed previously ? they will just dissaperer... or get uninstalled cause the hardware is not there anymore ?

In an ideal world, yes.

I have found this often doesn't work, however - better to remove all devices in Device Manager first, IMO.

Quick word of warning; If you've got an ATI graphics card, you may well find that a rebuild is a quicker option... CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk

lol kewl, I was asking this aswell cause I am upgrading my home pc to a P4 replacing the pII 350 (done well for its age) and have just brought the case, m/b, cpu, ddr ram and am going to use old components from my pc at the moment eg burner, hdd, geforce 2 vid card ... and was wondering how to do the installation of the new hardware on the old hdd, never done that b4 ... well not on my home pc, it doesn't matter if i stuff them up here are werk cause I just reload them :) lol

All the advice above is correct in theory but I have found in practice it is still far better to do a format and reinstall, systems that have had new mobos forced upon them always seem to lack stability even if the swap seems to go ok. At the very least remove every hardware item in device manager and reinstall the lot, particularly all the system devices. Then load the new motherboar drivers if any All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

That is particularly true of Windows NT/W2k/XP, but Win98 is a bit less fussy. I agree that a rebuild is the optimium solution.

*Make sure your data is backed up before you do either!* CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk

Dont be so fussy,

just run the hardware wizard in the control panel, it will remove and add drivers,

Then boot into safe mode and remove all multiple doubled up drivers,

reboot into normal mode and run the hardware wizard again just to be safe

sorry i forgot to mention to remove doubled up hard ware to to system in the contorl panel and choose device manager,

Then look down the list expanding as you go,

Well thanks for your help people, I did get it up and running after alot of restarting in safe mode and reinsalling devices, I have allways believed in a reload after new hardware has been added, but on my home pc I didn't have the gear to ghost my 40gig and 6gig drives to get the data of later .... thanks

New motherboard?

Go registry....HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and blow away " ENUM".
This forces Windows to rediscover ALL hardware devices.
Make sure that you've got the Windows cab files and all the device drivers handy.

This has always worked for me. It keeps all progam settings, etc.and saves a lot of time. This is especially important for client workstations as it all appears the same for them after you are finished.

Mike

mdkiwi,

Do you kill the whole ENUM key or just what's on the right hand side of it after clicking on ENUM? ggebhart@clover.net
I hope I never get too old or arrogant to learn something new!
