It appears that the CPU that runs our Merlin Legend automated attendant has expired.
We have been using the Interactive Northwest ESC system, and the system will not turn back on.

Can anyone suggest the best way to either get this system back up and running, or suggest a
newer, better, faster system to replace it.

Thanks!

There are a couple of decent third party voice mail systems that would offer newer functionality on the voice mail; DuVoice manufactures one I like. Also - depending on the funtionality you need, you might be better off finding a used Merlin Messaging board that just fits into a slot on the system.

Thank you both for the advice....The system actually powered back on this morning, and turned off again...

I may just bring the CPU to a computer repair shop to see if it is a fan or electrical problem causing the power turn off..

I do have an e-mail into DuVoice, asking for more information...

In the meantime, all calls are being answered at the switchboard.....just like to good old days....and the customers do not seem to mind at all!

Many thanks,
John

If you are anywhere in Southern California, I'd be happy to loan you a DuVoice and/or Merlin Messaging to test drive them. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, which I'd be happy to share my views about.

John,
Merlin Messaging has a nice IP interface and is very easy to set up. You can even go laptop directly to the IP port using a xover cable. I have 30 remote sites using Merlin Messaging 2.5 3.0 and 4.0 and administer them all from one location. Have had only 1 failure sinse 2002.

Papagigo1, what are you using for an interface to the Merlin Messaging?

There are a couple of ways to interface Merlin Messaging. If you like a GUI, go grab Merlin Messaging Administration software from Avaya's support site--it's free. Snap an Ethernet crossover cable between the board's LAN port and your PC or laptop (or use a straight-through if going directly to a switch). Note that the default IP address for Merlin Messaging is 10.0.0.42.

Need to change that address? Great. Now you get to learn that the very same 355AF adapter/serial cable combo that you would use to interface the Admin port of the processor is ALSO used to chat with Merlin Messaging. The big difference is that you won't use WinSPM to talk to the board, but rather ProComm, Hyperterminal or other terminal emulator. Strap the emulator for 38400, 8, 1, None and you're golden.

Lastly, you can access the same menus via the Merlin Messaging board's own internal modem (yep, it has one too). There are a couple of ways to do that, but I'll skip those for now. The main thing to understand is that you'd have to lock yourself into a dark vault at the bottom of the ocean in order to NOT gain control of such a board. The boys that designed that blade were pretty dang smart.

Thanks Tim, very informative as usual. I have accessed the MMsg locally and remotely. I'm was curious to see what hardware devices other techs use to access their legacy systems remotely. By the way, I want to thank you and all the other MVP's that are willing to share their knowledge and help all of us to understand our systems better. A star for you Tim.

Thanks again to all for the great information..

We may try to get this Intiuty CPU tower repaired, and please let me know if any of you good folks know where we might be able to get this done...

Thank you again,
John

Comdata,

I use Interactive Northwest Socket IP units to access the Magix WinSPM9 and a static IP address programmed directly into Merlin Messaging. Works great.
For locations without IP I just use a laptop and a crossover cable to get in..

Hope this helps,

Mike

Ok Tim,, you got my attention and curiosity......

Can you elaborate some?

Mike
