Please excuse my dumbness but with my new computer i got hardly any info on my modem, and i need the brand's latest driver cause its not working so good. When i look it up in my hardware list its a Generic 56k HCF Data Fax Modem, so in other words...does anyone know the website for Generic? I tried google but there are heaps of other groups with the name of Generic etc.

Generic isn't a make, its a term. In the case of drivers, generic drivers are supposed to work with everything. In some cases they don't work and in most cases they give you very limited use of whatever it is.
I would try to find the right drivers, e.g. look at the chipset on your modem, find out the model etc
