LSASS taking 100% CPU

I have a system that constantly (about once every other day)becomes very slow. Task manager shows LSASS process taking 100% of CPU. Developer can't do a thing and becomes impatient and reboots. Has anyone seen this problem??
This is a windows 2000 system with service pach 2 a PII 500MHz CPU, and 256 MB of memory, so its no slouch machine. Network is 100mb switched. :-(

I have seen this once. How I fixed was ran scandisk it found one problem and fixed it. The machine is still running great.
