Directories start out as 512 byte structures. As more files get added to the directory, the size of the directory has to increase to hold the list of files.

Evern empty directory size starts from 512 . It's size growz when it crossed 512 mark .

A directory may have a larger size even though there is very little in it, if it has contained a large amount of data in the past.
