I’m getting an error !20EE000B! Code when I try to boot the second LPAR on our test Power4 system. (I’m trying to get familiar with LPARing) The server is a 7028-6C4 with 2 processors, 4 gig of memory, 2 NICs and 2 hard drives (each hard drive has 5.2 ML10 installed). The firmware is up to date. It is connected to an HMC. I have created two profiles called LPAR1 and LPAR2. Each profile has 1 gig of ram and one processor assigned to it. LPAR1 has within the IO draw, Group_128 added to its profile, which contains the ISA Bridge, NIC and SCSI Bus Controller. LPAR2 has a NIC and SCSI Bus Controller, but no ISA Bridge. From the HMC, I can boot LPAR1 with no problems. When I go to boot up LPAR2, I get the !20EE000B! error. LPAR2 will only see the available NICs while in SMS mode. For some reason it wont see the other available hard drive. LPAR1 shows the second drive as defined, but not available. Also, shouldn’t I see two Groups, like Group_128 and Group_129? Since I’m splitting the resources? Any ideas?

I don't work with P4 machines but i think this code 20EE000B idicates that the LPAR can't find a boot image to boot from! so definately the problem is with the harddisk not being detected by the LPAR

Khalid

Thanks guys for the info. The firmware on the server is current, which is 3R080425. This critter is going to take a little more research to solve, but I think the link Khalidaaa has sent has put me on the right path. I will post what I find a little later, Thanks again.

Can you confirm each profile has it's own scsi card, and that one disk is connect to one card and the other to the other card. You cannot split the onboard scsi , and you should only see one Group_128 , as this server only has one ISA bus, that can be used by only one lpar. If lpar2 works when lpar1 is down , you are trying to split something that you can't.

Tony ... aka chgwhat

When in doubt,,, Power out...

Thanks chgwhat(Tony), for the info. Each Profile has a different scsi card assigned. Lpar1 has Slot_9/U0.1-P2/Z1 and Lpar2 has Slot_10/U0.1-P2/Z3. Am I correct in saying that both disks are attached to the same scsi? I booted off of Lpar1 and ran a prtconf.

hdisk0 U0.1-P2/Z1-A8 16 Bit LVD SCSI Disk Drive (146800 MB)

hdisk1 U0.1-P2/Z1-AA 16 Bit LVD SCSI Disk Drive (146800 MB)

Looks to me both disks are on the same bus, so you can't separate them into two LPARs...

The system has two scsi controllers. Is there any way to assign each disk to the different controller to make these LPARS work?

scsi0 U0.1-P2/Z1 Wide/Ultra-3 SCSI I/O Controller
scsi1 U0.1-P2/Z2 Wide/Ultra-3 SCSI I/O Controller

I've never see a 6C4 up close, but I googled around a bit and suggest you do too ;-)

7028-6C4 should (can?) have 4 disk bays. I'm betting the two disks are in one bay because either your server is not fully equipped with all disk bays or because someone has decided to put them in the same bay. Possibly each of your SCSI adapters services 2 disk bays, so that's another way to end up with both disks in one LPAR.

So shutdown all LPARs, remove the server's front cover and see where the disks are, put one of them in another/separate disk bay and see if that solves your problem....

Update: I have added a new SCSI card to the server and it resides in slot6 (IBM recommends slot 4, 5 or 6). The LPAR2 profile now sees the new SCSI card. When I go to change the boot devices in SMS on LPAR2, I can see and select the SCSI (card), but it won’t find any disk. This is what’s confusing, if I add the SCSI card to the LPAR1’s profile, it sees the drive. Any ideas?

what is the location code for the new card and the disk drive?

Above you wrote:
hdisk0 U0.1-P2/Z1-A8 16 Bit LVD SCSI Disk Drive (146800 MB)
hdisk1 U0.1-P2/Z1-AA 16 Bit LVD SCSI Disk Drive (146800 MB)

The U0.1 is the system unit.
The P2 is the I/O planar.
The Z1 is the scsi controller.
The A8 / AA is te disk scsi address.

If both disks are still on the Z1 controller then only one lpar will be able to use them.

When you installed the new scsi adapter, I guess in U0.1-P2-Ix, where X is the pci slot number, you also moved the disk on to this new card?

Thanks DukeSSD.
Here are the location codes.
The new drive is attached the the SCSI card.

(New SCSI card)
scsi2 U0.1-P2-I6/Z2 Wide/Ultra-3 SCSI I/O Controller
hdisk1 U0.1-P2-I6/Z2-A0 16 Bit LVD SCSI Disk Drive

SMS boot menu only shows bootable disks. Are you sure there's an OS on the second disk?

So boot from CD-Rom and in install menu see if you can find the disk.
