My system keeps giving me a message that there are low system resources, that it is increasing the page file. I am not doing that much on the system, and I have 1G of memory. I am not able to access the internet either. What can I do to check the system out?

Bring up Task Manager (CTRL + SHIFT + ESC). It'll show you all running processes, including the memory usage of each process. SOMETHING is chewing up all your memory. And without RAM, Windows will use virtual RAM, which may slow down performance to the point where your browser will stop working.

Once you find the culprit, you can work to disable that application and get your memory back.

Here is the Task Manager

Teatimer 91M
McShield 88M
svchost 7 times Local service (4), Network service (2), System (2) all around 25-30M
tomcat5 61M
explorer 54M
sqlserver 36M
crystalras 30M
CMS 22M
Other 20M or less look like nessecary exe's

Several things of note, based on this list:

1. I see TeaTimer is running, so you're using SPYBOT. There is a known 'conflict' with SPYBOT and IE8. See Spybot's website for more details of the issue and how you can address it (by disabling all immunizations). This may possibly be one of the reasons for the slow browser performance.

2. You're also running SQLSERVER. By default SQL will chew up any and all memory you have, unless you specifically configure it with memory limits. This is probably your memory hog. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about SQL SERVER to tell you exactly where to go to set those limits or what limits you should set. Perhaps if you leave a message in the SQL forum, someone can help you with that part.

3. You're using Crystal Reports. In my experience with old versions of this app, CR has had issues with releasing memory when done. The longer you leave the app running, the more the chance that you'll run out of memory, even when the system shows plenty of RAM available. It's quite possible that they've addressed this in newer version but, personally, I would make it a habit of either restarting the application often (as opposed to leaving it running all the time) or just plain restarting the computer often (if feasible in your environment) to try to flush memory and reclaim those lost areas.

Hopefully one or more of these observations is helpful to you.

Hi,
In addition having the CMS, the database ( engine and data) and the CR Server on the same PC is just asking for low resources...Unless you have some reason to have them always running, I would set those to manual and start them only when needed..

If you are hosting CR for others others to access, you need much more memory then 1GB

What processor and drives have you on that PC?

What are the purposes of CR Server and CMS? I am using SQL express and Crystal Report to run off a test data base. No one else needs to access the server or Crystal reports

Hi,
CR Server is one method of hosting Crystal Reports on a web site...the CMS ( Central Management Server) is used to authenticate and provide coordination between the CR Server's services which are used to deliver the published reports - Its database is the main repository for all the CR Server's objects and methods.

Sound like you have far more capabilites enabled than you need...

The docs here - may provide you with the architecture for CR Server and its components

When did this first become apparent? The question then becomes, what has changed since then? How often is it occurring at present?

Have you checked for malware too?

Can you access the Internet from "Safe Mode with Networking"?

Do other users suffer from the same problem?

What hardware is between your machine and your ISP?

I stopped using TeaTimer many years ago but still have Spybot installed (and IE8), can't say I have seen any problem from that combination.

It wouldn't hurt to run this program, it is a free download.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Running this command from a prompt might fix your Internet.
Netsh Winsock Reset.

RAM, Virtual Memory, PageFile and all that stuff.

I don't think I need either CR programs running as I am running it solo and don't have much access to the outside world from that machine. How do I shut them off or get rid of them?

If you don't need the programs anymore, just uninstall them. Just remember that the SQL stuff will probably be a separate uninstall from CR.

If you just want to DISABLE the processes, I would recommend that you run MSCONFIG from RUN under the START BAR and do a SELECTIVE STARTUP. You can deselect the processes that start your SQL server and other CR services from there. That will cover everything except for what might be in the STARTUP folder on your Start Menu. You can delete or move those options manually.

As for Spybot, it's up to you. Personally, I ran the UNDO on Immunization and my browser speed came back to normal. In my case, however, we have company anti-spyware and filters and firewalls to make up for that function. You may find that, after shutting down CR and SQL, there will be no need to touch Spybot at all.
