I have received the "low on system resources" or something like that once.

Any help would be appreciated.

Typically, these messages about low resources on Windows 9x is caused by the GDI and USER memory percentages. You can see what I mean by getting to any window and choosing HELP -> ABOUT and you will see "System Resources XX% Free", this is a combination of your USER and GDI resources that is available.

Now, once these numbers reach 40% or less, Windows 9x seems to come to its knees. Programs that have "memory leaks" are the ones usually guilty of you losing this type of memory.

Any program that takes USER or GDI memory, if coded correctly, should return all the memory it took to run, however that is not the case.

Other causes for this problem are running a LOT of programs in the system tray at startup. Cut down on these and those listed in the STARTUP folder in your Start Menu and this should help your problem.

Lastly, once that resource gets to the "low" point, only a reboot can get it back.

Good luck!

cdogg prepared this faq after a bunch of low resource postings earlier this year. Take a look at it and see if it gives you any help.
