Hello,
I work for a very small company (2 people). We submit electronic claims to Medicare via NSF 3.0 data files, but are now faced with converting to the new 837 HIPAA ANSI X12 standard. Our claims software is a custom Access application, and I can generate a text file with all the correctly delimted fields (data elements/segments). I am thinking we really don't need (and can't really afford) the larger software packages that cost $3K and up, and most likely do a lot more than we need done for our very limited needs (1 trading partner, 1 map needed).

Can anyone recommend a low cost translator that can get this text data into EDI format for us? Or am I being completely naiive? Any direction you can provide would be helpful.

Thank you,
Gretchen

Another option is an internet VAN. We had a trading partner use ICC.net. You can FTP a comma separated file and they will map it into the EDI format. There is a fee for building the map but it may be cheaper than purchasing software and hardware to run it. Also, their VAN rates were substantially better than the major VANs (although the other VANS were starting to drop their rates...) ICC.net can also build template screens for data to be manually entered. We had a small trading partner who had an invoice template created so they could send 810's.

Gretchen,

I would suggest that your company consider the HIPAA penalties of non-compliance versus the cost of a proven solution before making a final decision. The cost of producing HIPAA compliant software is significant and so are the penalties. With that said, here's one company that advertises low cost HIPAA solutions.

Michael,
I see info on remittance maps...can your product also map the claim (837)..this is the most important part for us.

If you just have One Map and One trading partner and don't see any major additions in the near future try PERL or AWK scripting. That might workout best for you.

Gretchen,
iTech Worskshop has very cost effective solutions to translate NSF files to 837 P/I. We also do the reverse.
So also for 835 and NSF ERA. Please visit to see more details.
