Hi All
We are running Notes release 5. On one of our computers, Notes consistently freezes the system as many as 5 - 10 times a day. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Notes a couple of times and increased the amount of ram in the system but so far it hasn't helped.

The system is a Toshiba Portege 7010CT laptop
PII - 300 MHz processor, 160 MB of RAM, 6 GB hard drive.
The laptop is running Office 97.

When the system hangs, excel or word are usually open as well.

Thanks in advance

What Desktop OS is the laptop running?? If less than Win2K, you may need to reboot every couple of hours to overcome the memory fragmentation problem built into Win95/98. Try pre-emptive reboots, or upgrade to Win2K/Office 2K.

The other possibility is that Notes may be tying up all the resources on your PC whilst re-indexing, compacting or performing other routines on local databases.
Our Laptop PCs all suffered a similar problem when we had full replica's of the Names.nsf database, at the time it was about 1.5 gb in size and was causing the PCs to write to the Harddisk continually for about 20-30 minutes making the PC unusable during this period.

We have experienced similar problems with users on OS versions Win95/WinNT/Win2K. Have increased the NSF_Buffer_Pool_Size to 80MB (default is 40MB) within the Notes.ini file but seems to reduce the number of freezes but it doesn't eliminate them. Also noticed a wierd occurrance in Task Manager, I have two occurrances of nlnotes.exe (1) using about 33K of memory and the other 28K. I shut Notes down and one disappears (28K) but the other is still there??? Does anyone have any ideas why this happens?

The multiple occurrences of nlnotes.exe or notes.exe happen to us sometimes when we double-click on the Notes shortcut, and each click starts a session. Also, sometimes Notes.exe starts, but doesn't show on screen, so the user keeps trying, and winds up with dozens of running, but non-displaying occurrences. It goes away with SP3 to Win2K, and upgrading to Notes 5.0.8 or 5.0.9. Also, don't use NMinder.exe, have the user minimize the Notes client and get notification that way. Fred Wagner

Delete the C:\temp\*.tmp files, empty the Recycle Bin, and restart the computer.
