looks like you're going to have to try and get a hold of the user's original id, which may have a known password. otherwise you're probably stuck, because mailfile encryption is based on the user's public key, for which the secret key is stored in the users' id file. another alternative is brute force decryption, which for north-american id will take many years (as in thousands of years, or is it millions? <br>

to keep it all under control and avoid problems generated by users themselves we have a policy to distribute 2 id's, 1 to the user, 1 filed with an initial password. whenever users loose there password or laptop's get lost etc...

Yes sounds like you're hosed. I almost asked if you have support through IBM. However, if you did would you be posting your problem here? Backing up data is an important part of working in the IT field. Prepare for the worst in every aspect possible.
We recently had an accidental deletion of all the ID's but had a backup.
