I wiped (reformatted) my HD and reinstalled my OS (XP Pro) and all my other software. I do this every 12 months or so. This is the first time I did it since installing a Western Digital 300GB slave drive. I can see the drive but when i go to access it I am told it needs to be formated. How do I get it to see it correctly? I know the files are there because i used a free version of a program called GetDataBack and it let me see the files.

XP must be at least at the Service Pack 1 level in order to fully access a drive larger than 137GB. I suspect your XP install disk has no embedded Service Pack.

Another possibility is you had a program called GoBack installed prior to the reformat. If this is the case, reinstall it to restore access to your slave drive.

In Windows disk management (under My Computer) it show the drive as 298GB and healthy but no File System. XP has all the updates installed after the OS install. (they were not embedded in the install disk) And I was never aware of any software called GoBack on my PC.

My last guess then was your drive was formatted NTFS. If so, there have been numerous cases of lost partitions similar to what you are seeing, but no one has presented a cure other than using data recovery like GetDataBack.

Have you tried connecting the drive to another computer to see if it is readable?

You could always try the autoplay repair wizard from Microsoft. Although not meant for hard drives really, it may pick up a problem

nelg,
Why do you format anually?

I personally hate to redo my setup so I keep my system clean and running the way I like
