I am a consultant and on my site we have a Sun Ultra-2 that I want to bring up for Oracle. I have the workstation on my desk. I am the Oracle DBA. No one here knows any passwords or knows where the cds are. I called Sun and they want a $2500 PO just to talk to me. Can anyone help me bring up this machine?

Download an ISO of the SUN OS and boot it to the CDROM. Then follow the following FAQ --> faq60-1568

for $2500 _I_ will fly to you and bring up the machine... :)

What version of Solaris?

Mike

"Whenever I dwell for any length of time on my own shortcomings, they gradually begin to seem mild, harmless, rather engaging little things, not at all like the staring defects in other people's characters."

I am not sure what version of Soloris it is running. And I do not know what ISO is. I'm googling it. I really appreciate everyone's help. I'm on my own here when it come to Oracle and Unix. I can handle the Oracle and most of the Unix if I could just get on it. And Franz, I would love to be able to fly you down to boot this thing up for me!

ISO the way it is used here is short for ISO9660 which is the International Standards Organisation standard number 9660 defining the format of data stored on CDs and DVDs. You can often find 'images' of CD-ROMs called FILENAME.ISO, which you can use CD writing software to write to a blank CD.

To download Solaris 9:

To download Solaris 10:

Note that you do NOT need the installation CD for Solaris 9, you can boot off CD1. The installation CD just gives you a GUI version of the installer.

I am downloading the installation disks right now! Thank you so much Annihilannic! Great information. I am almost positive we have Solaris 10. Once I have then disks, how do I boot it to get it in single user mode?

Franz, I'm in the metro Detroit Michigan USA area. I think the climate is close to yours. Nothing tropical here!

I downloaded and burned on the first ISO for disk1. Is this correct? Whn I put this CD in, I get a media error. I can traverse through the files on my PC though. I do not know how to get to any prompt. I just get the console login prompt.

Here is the first part of the procedure:

Load the Solaris cdrom (This does not have to be the same Solaris version as the machine.)

Take the machine down to the PROM level -
# init 0 (or halt)

When it comes down to the OK prompt -
OK boot cdrom -s
--------------------------------------------------------
What should I do?

I can't get anything besides the console login prompt. I tried the ISO file for 9 and the first ISO CD for 10. I don't know any other way to boot this box except for powering off/on.

You have to power it off and on again. When the system starts to boot press STOP + A on the keyboard at the same time. Then stick your cd-rom in and type boot cdrom -s and wait 30 minutes for it to come up since it is an Ultra 2, LOL.

Rock on coffeysm! I finally got to the OK prompt. Now when I try to boot to the cdrom I get errors. I burned ISO files to cds and tried Solaris 9 and disk1 of Solaris 10. Any ideas. Are these the right disks I should be booting too?

You need Disk 1 of Solaris 8 or 9. I am not sure what disk for Solaris 10 though. What kind of errors do you get?

I think there are some tricks to burning bootable CD's, but I forget what they are... maybe something you can research though.

Boot Device:/sbus/SUNW,fas@e,8800000,sd@6,0:f File and args: -s
Short disk read
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.
Boot Device: disk:a

It looks like it switches to boot from disk a.

I think I am just going to purchase the Solaris 10.
Thank you all.

Don't give up! We were having so much fun! :)

What CD-burning software are you using? And what settings (choice of CD format, etc)?

Annihilannic.

I am not sure about the formats. I don't have a CD burner so I had to get network guy to burn it. I know he used Roxio.
