If your PC is part of a Domain/AD, and there is a group in your Domain/AD that grants local administrator rights to your PCs, you can log on as your domain user with these rights and change the administrator password manually without the need to recover it.

If you're running XP, reboot your PC in Safe Mode. XP will display a log-on screen with user names & an icon for Administrator. Log on to the Administrator account (leave the password blank unless you've assigned one). Once in Windows go to Control Panel & select User Accounts & reset the passwords for any account.
