Don't know when this started. I have Outlook Express (6) set to "open e-mail" when I click on it. If I need to access anything to do with the O.E. program, I go into e-mail, scroll up and click to the line that says "Outlook Express". I just tried it today and when I click on "Outlook Express". I get a blank page with "Outlook Express" at the top! I tried add and remove, and I.E.Fix. Any ideas?

Check and make sure no software firewall is installed and if one is installed disable or shut it down and try opening OE again. If still not opening disable each program showing in systray one at a time and try opening Oe after each one until you find the one that is blocking it.

That's what is strange. O.E. does work. It's just that it is stuck on the "When Outlook Express starts, go directly to my Inbox". To see what I'm talking about, open O.E.. Thats what I don't get, it opens directly to my "InBox" as instructed. Normally, I can scroll to the left top of of the page where it says "Outlook Express" (above "Local Folders", which is above "Inbox" - "Outbox" - etc.), and click on "Outlook Express". This would open the full Outlook Express. Now it just lists the above listed menu, and normal toolbar, but no normal O.E. layout. I don't normally use the full page anyway, I'm just puzzled where it went!

Look under View and layout and check the folder list and folder bar and any others you want showing.

tlcscousin:

Those are all there in the inbox page. That's the problem, all I have IS the inbox page!

When you looked at the layout the relevant boxes are checked?
When you look at the screen is there a seperater bar on either the right or left?
If so can you click on it and drag it either left or right(depending on where it is)?
When you drag it does it then show the missing parts?

The seperator bars are all there. I have all the boxes checked in "Layout". I can drag them around. To show you what I'm trying to explain: open to your "Inbox". Now go up the menu to "Outlook Express". Click there. Nothing changes. Clicking back and forth between "Inbox" and "Outlook Express", makes no difference!

I can replicate the issue because i have no accounts setup in Outlook express, i am using it (OE) just for newsgroups.
When it (OE) opens at the top it says OE or does it mention an identity? (just wondering if somehow it got set to open to an identity)

Have you looked in the stores folder (tools\Options\Maintenance\Stores folder [will show path]) and ensured the .dbx files are there?

Yes, everything's (DBX files) there. It has to be - e-mail (O.E.) works fine. It's the O.E main page that won't come back. It looks just like the inbox with the menu missing. Like I said before - open Outlook Express. That's the page that is missing.

If you click on other subfolders like sent items does it show the proper view?

If so you can try renaming inbox.dbx to inbox.old and Oe will create a new one when you open it again.

If the proper view is then available it was a corrupt dbx file. If it is still the same rename the new one that was created to inbox.old2 and then rename inbox.old back to inbox.dbx which should restore the old one.

I don't want to appear unappreciative, but it is NOT a "DBX" problem. My e-mail works just fine. All the menu items UNDER Outlook Express" works O.K. It is the main page "OUTLOOK EXPRESS" that is missing. To demonstrate: Open the e-mail section. Go to views/layout. Uncheck them all. THAT is what I get when I go to "Outlook Express". I can recheck them and get my e-mail to work fine. When YOU open YOUR native Outlook Express, you see a full page. I don't. I just see all the e-mail functions.

The page that you get is the normal one unless you check the box when outlook express starts go to my inbox or you can go to tools Options and check the box
When starting go directly to my inbox (on the general tab)you then exit OE and reopen it and it should retain the setting.

Part of the problem with finding a resolution, is the way that you're describing what's missing. Many (most?) OE users only see that display once. There is nothing that is displayed there that can't be done some other way, and describing that particular displayed frame as 'Full Outlook Express' is a bit confusing. That frame is really only displaying a web page, with links to other OE functions that most people access some other way.

I believe that page is created by msoeres.dll If you have XP, moving or renaming that file (with OE closed) should cause Windows to restore it from the .dll cache. You will find the file in C:\Program Files\Outlook Express. Right-click & rename it to msoeres.old or something. Then open OE and a new one should be created. If you don't have XP, we'll need to find a way to restore it manually.

smah: That didn't work! I renamed msoeres.dll, rebooted to be sure, opened O.E. and got the error message "OUTLOOK EXPRESS could not open. Could not find msoeres.dll. You may have to reinstall OUTLOOK EXPRESS." Changed it back and I'm back to square one. Oh, and it is XP SP/2.

tlcscousin: That picture is exactly what I'm NOT getting! That is what I'm looking for. <grin>

It's not that big of a problem, I just want to know where it went!

That's odd, on my system (XP SP2), when I rename or move that file a new one is created of the exact same version. The current version is 6.0.2900.2180. What version is the one that you have?

My guess is that this file is corrupt or damaged & the dll cache version seems to be nonexistant. System File Checker might be able to fix this. Open a command prompt & type sfc /scannow

Same version. I guess I'll have to try scannow. Welcome to the world of Windows!

If that is what you are looking for try tools Options and uncheck when starting go direct to my inbox and then OK and restart OE.
