Recent problem encountered on GroupWise 5.5 post office. When a user re-opens an old message the text appears to have been deleted. This problem seems to be random in that many users are being affected but only a few messages for each user.
Any ideas as to the cause or suggestions on how to recover messages would be welcome.

Thanks
Alan

Sounds like your message database could be corrupt..is your server going into ABEND?

No problems with server going into ABEND so far.

On the messages that there is no body, is the icon a push-pin? (thumbtack)?

Icon is just an envelope (open) and paper clip if there was an attachment (attachments are also missing)

Alan.

Having performed some other routine maintenance work on the post office the icons have now changed to that representing "Opened discussion topic posted in a shared folder". The text is still missing and the messages are not in a shared folder.

Alan,

Sounds like corruption in one of your message databases. Try to run GWchk32 against the whole post office. Look at the log, and match up the users to what dbase they are attached to. My guess is that what appears to be random is not. GroupWise creates 25 message databases for each post office regardless of the number of users in the post office, and then (somewhat) randomly, distributes them to the message databases. If you find out that all of the users are associated with one or two message dbs (form for the dbs are msg??.db) you can put your attention on them.

When a message has an attachment larger than 4kb (I think that's right) or so, it will take the attachment and put it into the offiles directory with a link back to the message in the db. If the offiles directory gets damaged or deleted, then the link has nowhere to go.

Check on what message dbs are effected, look at the offiles directory. That might get you moving in the right direction.

Good Luck,

Bruce

I just dealt with this problem with a few of my Users...

Run GroupWise maintenance, ANALYZE AND FIX with all items checked, against the Users database file. Once that has been completed, run another maintenance - STRUCTURAL REBUILD, on the Users database file.

This should recreate any missing links to the MSG database and OFFILES.

Have the User check to see if the info that was not there before, is there now. If you see an error message in the email message body, it means that the data for this particular email message is no longer available.

Good Luck!
