Hi Guys

I have an SBS 2K3 system with Exchange connected to the outside world via the SMTP port (not using the pop3 manager) - seems to work great.

Its seems that 99.9% of mail arrives and everything gets sent ok. Apart from one (isnt there always)

A company using "fsnet.co.uk" sends mail to us but it vanishes without a trace. When we send mail to them, they receive it ok.

Is there a way to look through logs to see if the local SMTP server received it? and then trace what it does with it after?

Any ideas would be appreciated please.
Jerry

Yes the SMTP logs (if enabled) should be somewhere.
Try c:\windows\system32\logfiles\smtpsvc\

To trace what happens after - load the ESM and use the message tracker.

note: fsnet.co.uk doesnt exist as a mail domain..... ?? is it something else like bob.fsnet.co.uk?

Hiya Nick

Thanks for that - yes there is more to the email, its "usersname@thiercompany.fsnet.co.uk" - a bit naff, would have thought this company would have had a proper domain - cheap skates - smiles.

Anyway. I will look and see if the logs enabled/there - how do you load ESM?

Many Thanks
Jerry

err, well not having sbs2003 myself - only exchange2003 so i'm not sure. something like:
On the server... Start->Programs->Microsoft Exchange->System Manager

Nick Hi

I'm sorry I didn't realise ESM was Exchange System Manager, dumb of me I know, apologise.

I have wandered around ESM trying to find out how to turn on logging for SMTP, I can't find anything.

There is no logfile for SMTP in the location you suggest.

Thanks for your help
Jerry

try the properties of the Default SMTP Virtual Server
It's somewhere down thru... Protocols/SMTP/default virtual server.

On the general tab is the SMTP logging details. click properties to get the location.

Nick Hi

Found it thanks. I'll see if that gives me any clues.

Thanks for your help - I might be back - smiles

Jerry

Nick Hi

When trying to track a message in ESM - I get a message about a tracking database is not available or the message has left the system.

it gives an id = c1032751 - any idea where I might find info on that please.

Cheers
Jerry

First of all, are the SMTP logs showing the incoming mail?

You need to turn on message tracking. google will tell you how.

Hi Nick

Thanks, turned on message tracking and its recording all sorts of mail traffic, seems quite straight forward.

Thanks - I suspect I'll be back

Jerry

Hi Guys

Well we have been sending mails back and forth - it seems outgoing mail from this client is going through Newnets SMTP server. I can see the smto logs and using trace mail see its final desination, it never seems to arrive in the system at all.

It seems the Newnets smtp server doesnt send to exchange smtp servers like mine or another two exchange sites I have setup for these clients.

There are no other issues with sending mail to our exchange servers, no other complaints of undeleivered mail or rejected mails.

I wonder if there is a smpt handshake protocol I need to allow Newnets smtp server to relay the mail to me? Whats this ETRN stuff?

Any thoughts please?

Jerry - confused
