This is a long shot but is there any way of finding out who is hosting my website. My ftp prog has stiffed and I can't remember who is my ISP. I can probably recall the login/pw details though.

Go here:

Enter the domain name of your website (eg website.com if you get to it via in the "Query the InterNIC database"
In the details it will show some information about who the domain is owned by.

This may or may not be your ISP, but it could give some clues as to who it is.

John

Ok, now ping your domain name.

You will get back a response with an IP address.

Take this IP address, it will look something like 192.168.0.1 and type it into the Generic Whois lookup on name/IP address.

This should give you some contact information about who owns that IP address and the contact information.

John

traceroute that host/ip, maybe one of the last hops will show something. Probably someone could find your hosting provider if we knew the domain.

Not much came up on my research.. cnchost.com and concentric.net - may be the same, on the exactly same line.. and a funny 15(+) hop loop for 207.155.252.97, which also among the others has a funny pointer

xmb (gp:1:0)~ $ host 207.155.252.112
112.252.155.207.in-addr.arpa is an alias for 112.0/24.252.155.207.in-addr.arpa.
112.0/24.252.155.207.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer leander.cnchost.com.

Else, not much.

Pretty much what I came up with too. I came across XO hosting which is the parent company of concentric but neither of them are the right ones..I'm vaguely remembering it was something like Virgin or Demon that I used.

Success!!! XO communications is the one...it's funny because I can't recall ever hearing of this company before, perhaps they changed their name!!! Many thanks to both for your valuable help. All I need now is the ftp address and I can update my site!!

Sorted...All systems GO!!

(I love it when a plan comes together!!)

Good stuff =) i was thinking xo was just providing lower level services, but oh well =)

XO is a facilities based telecom provider. They likely purchased the company you originally set your stuff up with.

For future reference, a very handy tool for getting info about your (or anyone elses) web presence is the "dig" or "nslookup" tools in *nix or windows.

Use the man or help pages to get full details.
