I have installed a new copy of XP Pro on a new system within the past week. I set up an Internet connection to my ISP using a dial up connection. All went well. Today I log in, and log into IE using the connection. There is no internet connection icon in the system tray. Therefor I cannot log off the internet without logging out of windows. I seem I have lost the network connection files. I have uninstalled the connection and tried installing it again several times with the same result, no auto disconnect. Have also checked the box in internet options to show icon in tray. I went into
network connections and there is no file there at all. Any help would be appreciated.

you can disconnect from the start menu. Go to my connections, and then select your connection, and it will have a button with the option to log off.

Thanks rodhuffaker, I checked that, and it semms I have no connections. Nothing shows up, so I cannot log off that way.

Th only place that it shows up now is in the internet options in the control panel, nothing under network options, even though I created the account through there using the create a new connection feature.

Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling the protocol for your dial up connection. That could help.

Start, Settings, Network Connections, right-click your dial-up connections, Properties, and check the box at the bottom to show the icon.

If your dial up connection is using PPOE for DSL, do the same steps.

If it does not appear and you have enabled ICS "Internet Connection Sharing":

The Internet Gateway icon requires that you:

Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Add or Remove Windows Components, double-click the Network Services subsection, and check the boxes for SSDP Discovery Services, and uPnP Service.

Apply, OK your way back to the desktop, and reboot.

Give it a few minutes to appear.

Thanks bcastner, tried that, rebooted, uninstalled it in internet options, reinstalled it under network options, again nothing. No file is created in that folder nothing is located on the task bar. But the connection works.

There are a lot of things that interfere with what Microsoft has decided to call the "Notification Tray", including a lot of Microsoft applications.

Frankly, the area is a mess.

The direction is to eliminate it, but I am with you that it is very usefull.

Try Kelly Theriot's little repair utility. It gives you a nag screen on start, just continue. Let her try and repair the notification area:

Thanks bcastner, tried that, guess what, still the same, I guess at this point, what is the easiest way to eliminate all of the above and start from scratch( other than complete reinstall).

See my FAQ: faq608-746263
In particular sections #2-#3

Reboot a lot.
If this does not resolve the issue, post your Hijack This log here.

Your ISP should be able to answer this. I think you need to download a new copy of your ISP connection files. Go to your ISP, Netzero, MSN, etc. Click on download new copy of Setup files. I hope this helps.
