Using win xp the software reports that 5gig of HDD space has been used, but all the folders added together only equal 2.5gig, Where is the other 2.5gig ???? out of 50 gig.

CHKDSK reports that there are errors but cannot fix as it cannot lock drive. When scheduled to run at start up system crashes and reboots. HOW do i recover this lost HDD space ??

With win98 etc Scandisk or CHKDSK used to allow you to recover the space of lost fragments etc. but not Win XP can
ANYONE HELP !!!!!!!!!

Cheers Kolobos..............

FAT32 or NTFS format?
Was HDD partitioned before loading OS?

Im using NTFS file system, hard drive was partitioned before loading OS and has been perfect for months until now.

CHKDSK will run but WILL NOT repair errors.....

Many Thanks for your help and i will check out the above utility....

A complete format and re-install is the last option.....

NTFS requires a bigger chunk of disk space than FAT32 for its file system.
My XP uses 8gig of HDD for it and it is classed as unallocated space.
