Lost Desktop Icons

Hello there,

A friend of mine with XP has lost his desktop Icons. The taskbar is still visible. The desktop icons appeared briefly when he was shutting down...but they are not visible at other times.

He also seems to be having a bit of trouble with IE. It won't access one particular site directly. (I can access it though)

Any help appreciated.

bit lacking in info - XP only displays recycle bin as desktop icon by default - if you go into display properties/desktop/customise desktop...

If you're talking about other desktop icons - please say.

the desktop will show icons if he created short cuts there or has it in classic mode.
right click on the desktop and make sure that "show desktop icons" under arrage icons by, is checked off,if not, check it off, if it is you may want to click on the "run desktop cleanup wizard" under the same sub-heaading.
something has probably corrupted the desktop icons.

Reminds me of a favorite prank...capture the screen and use it as wallpaper...copy the icons to a folder and wait for them to figure it out....

I ran into this problem on one of my systems.

there was a conflict with Axis print server software that I had installed on the xp laptop. The software was not compatible with xp. As soon as I removed it the icons returned.
