Using Microsoft windows ME and have lost modem connection and COM 2. Only ports registered are COM 1 and LPT 1.
Understand I have to go to BIOS but haven't a clue how to do that. Can you guide me in simple language - I'm a simple 75 year old silver surfer !!!

yes, I've reinstalled the modem software and when I go to Modem properties I can't find COM 2, and the computer says that there is no modem.

What is your modem? Brand and Model?

(because some modems are really connected as COM2, and others use a driver to emulate COM2, so it is hard to help if we don't know.)

The modem is an Hayes V92 PCI Voice Faxmodem.
Does that help or do you need any more information ?

The driver does most of job on these modems.

What I suggest is that you uninstall the modem software (control Panel, Install/Uninstall software), then you power down the PC, open it and reinstall the modem card in a different PCI slot. This will force the system to see the change, and hopefully it will reinstall properly the software for your card.

Make sure that the card seats properly in the motheboard PCI connector. Be careful about static.

If your system does not see the modem at power-up, then maybe it is really dead.
