I recently installed the "patch" fixing shutdown issues on my 98SE installation. Since then my shutdows are successful (so far) but now get the "It is now safe" screen upon successful shutdown instead of powering off automotically.<br><br>I know that in NT there is a registry setting for enabling auto power off, but I can't seem to find any similar setting for 98. Any ideas?

Hi, <br> I installed few patches on few of my computers, It does the same.. Same problem as you, and some, even more..<br><br>Microsoft is aware of the problem and still working on it but, it depends of your motherboard.. Yep..! The motherboard, the BIOS and a good installation of your O/S. <br><br>So, if you find something, let us know..! That way, I won't have to wait after Microsoft..<br><br>Ben_Cool

I replaced the motherboard and now everything works fine. I also booted the new board initially into SAFE MODE and deleted all the registered devices (ALL) and let windows rediscover everything. I don't know which helped more. My question is, if the motherboard was the problem, why was it working (power off) before the patch?<br><br>

The the reason your auto-off feature didn't work on the motherboard befire you replaced it is because your motherboard did not have the soft power-down feature built into it. Most of the newer board have this feature and utilize it through Win98. That is the reason the problem was solved when you replaced the motherboard.
