An upgrade from Mac OS 8.1 to Mac 0S 9.04 on a Beige G3 resulted in the loss of access to the cdrom drive for data cd's. The drive will read and play audio cd's, but placing a data cd (i.e.; norton utilities) results in the message that the disc needs to be initialized or the system freezes. The system will boot from a data cd.
Bumping back down to 8.1 reveals that the cdrom drive is working fine since data cd's play. I tried updating to 9.1, but this did not work either.
I made sure that the Quicktime preferences did not have Quicktime autoplaying cd's. I copied the cdrom/dvd extensions from 8.1 to the 9.04 extensions folder, with no noticeable results. I did clean two clean installs of 9.04, with no improvement.
We figure it must be a software problem. Any suggestions?
