We recently replaced our older routers with Cisco 6509's (w/msfc cards). Since doing that, our Centillion 5000 switches lose IP connection off and on throughout the day. Some other various devices do as well (servers, etc.). If I keep a constant ping going to the switch or device, then it is always reachable. This happens at more than one site of ours. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Could be something in the switch config but hard to say without seeing it. And what do you mean by "lose IP connection?" What is the indication?

We have HP Openview and it records an alarm that the nodes are "down". When we try to ping the Centillions/servers from anywhere but the local rail, they are unreachable.

There is a bug when running 6509s w/ MSFCs in hybrid mode. The CEF/ARP tables become corrupted, and it takes a clear ip route * to fix the issue. Since you can hit the devices from the MSFC, but not from beyond the MSFC, this might fit your situation. We switched all of our 6509s to Native, that fixed the issue.

Hybrid? Native? How do I tell what they are running?

If it looks like a switch, with a router blade, it is hybrid. If the whole gosh darn thing looks like a router, including fast ethernet ports, it is Native. So try a show ip interface brief from the router, and if fastethernet ports show up, its Native. If only VLANs and WAN links show up, its not.

Does the problem exist in the switch OS or the MSFC-2 OS?

and is there a newer release of the OS that takes care of this problem?

Does anyone know the Cisco Number for this bug? Is there any documentation on this? Please help :)

do you see status errdisable when you do a 'show port'? It is highly recommended by Cisco that you NOT use 'auto' settings for speed/duplex. We get frequent 'errdisable' status on our 6509 if we do not 'set port speed 10/100' and 'set port duplex half/full'. Must do same on all NICS on the network and other switch ports connectin to 6509.

Maybe this will help? "If you lived here, you'd be home by now!"
