Losing points on Line Graph due to 'on change of'

X axis-System Serial Number
Y axis-Total Run Time
Data points - colored differently depending on failure mode


Currently I am plotting a line graph (then selecting markers on) with following set up:

On change of: Serial Number
On change of: failure mode

show values: total run time


This plot works very well and looks good, the only problem is a system can fail twice for the same reason and this plot will only show one of those failures.

So if System 100 fails twice due to failure mode #1, it only shows the first failure.


I have tried a scatter plot but it makes me select 'count' or 'distinct count' instead of showing the actual serial number.

I'd love your advice! Thanks

Do you have a field that uniquely identifies each failure point?
If not, you could use a concatenation of serial number and date which would force both points.

I do have a unique identifier and it is idComments.

So I concatenated idComments and failure mode; this worked and plotted every point. The only caveat is now every point has its own legend entry and different color.

Now I dont know if I can have the lemonade and drink it too, but itd be great if the legend was color coded with the different failure modes-instead of every point.

I concatenated the serial number and date and that plotted every point but the x-axis then has an entry for each point as well.


The ideal set up is each serial number has a spot on the x-axis, and the colored data points are aligned vertically above the serial number.

You can manually change the colors of the data points by selecting each point and right clicking, etc., but not dynamically.

You might have to create a manual legend, using text boxes, as the chart expert does not have the kind of functionality you are looking for.

Or you might consider purchasing a chart add-on. I haven't used this, but it might give you more flexibility. Try

I might consider a graphing package.

For now I think I'll try to work around by having a graph that just plots all failures without specificying the failure mode.

I can also have a graph for each failure mode and that will also eliminate the problem.
