I will be working along and all of a sudden the program crashes and none of the backups I thought would be there are there either. Any suggestions?

technogeke...
as you are working your workstation is running out of resources - ie RAM. ALWAYS save REGULARLY is the golden rule in DTP. Unfortunately a hard lesson to remember. DO NOT rely on Quark backup. A waste of time.

Most probably, your preferences file has been corrupted.
If u r using 4.x, drag your preferences file to some other location and try relaunching QXP. Mostly, this will solve ur problem.
Note: In case of QXP 5.x, drag the preferences folder.

Just check that you are checking the right destination folder you mentioned for backup.

Anyways Backups won't do you any good unless you save them. Get into the habit of saving your work often. Use Ctrl-S (Windows®) or Command-S (Mac®).

Since version 3.3, QuarkXPress has had an auto backup feature. I recommend you use it . It will save the most recent 5 backups by default, but this number can be changed. Every time you save your work, it generates a new backup copy.
