I have a problem with my new DSL connection failing after an unspecified time.

I am running XP Pro with SP1 and a DSL modem connected directly to a USB port. My internet connection shows up as a Local Area Connection running at 10Mbps and I have a dynamic IP address that is automatically assigned to me. Everything works fine except that I keep getting disconnected - this may be after 20 hours or 3 or 12. It happens when the PC is unattended or when I'm streaming a radio program. When I try and repair the connection I get the 'Error renewing the ip address, purging the dns resolver cache' message. When i restart the system everything is okay again.
I've tried a number of solutions - applying the WinsockFix patch, getting completely rid of an old ZoneAlarm installation, making sure no devices are set to power down when not used. I think that it may be because my DHCP lease isn't being renewed but I can't seem to track down why this is happening.

Anyone got any ideas?

thanks....

There could be a number of reasons for this...The physical connection between your DSL modem and the CO could have some weather related or temperature related problems that could be causing intermitten drops. It could be as simple as a loose connection at the NID. Make sure the phone company techs that check your connection have dsl test equipment (TTI, Acturna) that can emulate your modem and give eec error reports and Bits-per-tone and Signal-to-ratio readings (you could be sharing telephone cable pairs with too many T1 connections that can block out some of your frequency range). Do a continuous ping test (ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -t) (control C to stop it) and see what your latency and ttl looks like. Also, download Adaware SE and make sure that you don't have bugs trying to send packets that can hammer the modem and lock it up. Crowtalks

Do you have dsl filters on all your active phone lines in your house , this is required with dsl . This should have been supplied by the ISP or they should have told you to obtain them at radio shack or equivalent site .

Dang! I've installing these things for years and totally forgot to mention filters... Thanks Vipergg! Crowtalks

Thanks Crowtalks and vipergg.
Regarding the dsl filters - I have them installed on all active phone points. However should the dsl connection to the main incoming phone point have no filter?

It's a one-or-the-other thing. If they're installed at the jacks (including satellite receivers), you don't need them outside...normally. If you have a lot of jacks, you probably need a splitter outside to isolate your DSL connection. Since you're dropping connection, ask the phone company to do this anyway to try and isolate the problem (Geez, I can't believe I ovrlooked filters the first time....) Crowtalks

The ISP makes a difference as well. I had a customer in the past that went with both Earthlink DSL and SBC DSL. Earthlink's dropped frequently (every 30 min or so). He ended up switching to SBC which on average only changed once a week.

I've also had this problem myself, and in my situation, I had faulty wiring at the phone box right outside of my home. After splicing new points on each wire and reseating the connection, the interference went away along with the frequent disconnect problem.

So as you can see, there are a number of possible causes. Another workaround is to get yourself a cheap router that will keep the connection alive (it will reconnect every 30 seconds or so when a connection is dropped).

As far as filters, all telephones need to be filtered! there is not a filter for the dsl. The filter is filtering the digital of the dsl (help me out guys if I got it backwards) out of the analog from the phone line.

Absolutely, every phone needs a filter, however if the dsl line (the actual line connected to the modem goes through a filter, instead of straight through the line.

Also, I don't know what service you have, however Verizon here in the midwest has had beau coup trouble lately... I changed the filter, patch cable (don't forget to examine both ends of the cable) the rj11 line (are there any cracks in the insulation of the wiring? the nic, AND the modem, and still had to call Verizon out for a customer's phone the other day. The only thing I didn't do was follow the cable back to the closet, because the modem sat right beside the user's system, and it was a one user system.

Also, did you set the system up for an internet connection? even though it is only one computer still the Internet connection wizard needs to be run...

I'm crossing my fingers that we helped you!

yes thanks everyone - the connection is much better now I fitted filters
