I have two staff members that connect to a database that is located on another pc. When they start their computer, the connection works, but after some time it loses it. The only way to get it back is to restart their computer. Any ideas why this happens?

This might be an ARP timeout issue ore something else.To really understand the problem we need the network configuration etc. At least check hwo the connection goes through. Sometimes if redundancy kicks in, in some cases you might lose connection for some time until the new port on the switching equipment learns the dest/source MAC address.
There are some simple tests you can do if you are not a network infrastructure guy.

Action Plan:

1- In the command window use ipcong /all and arp -a to
find out your PC's and the data base PC's MAC address
respectively.

2- When the connection is lost check if the arp entries are
still there on the PC and the data base PC.

3- Try pinging the computer from the data base PC and see
if it is successful, and if the connection to data base
is restored.

4- Do the ping the other way around.

If pings in steps 3 and/or 4 restores the data base PC connectivity than the problem was that in the infrastructure some kind of redundancy or failover changed the connectivity.

If you have questions and intend to go deeper by sending network diagram etc you can directly e-mail me at hannibal512@hotmail.com

Bye
