-I have a customer with 2 remote sites.
-Neither site has the networking option enabled.
-Both sites are CXi's with the latest software.
-Both sites have less than 10 phones.
-The cost of adding the networking option to both systems is prohibitive.
-I would rather not introduce 3rd party devices for IP-Analog conversion
-There is rudimentary IP connectivity between the sites

Does anyone know of a way for the Mitel Controllers to connect to each other without adding 3rd party hardware?

i.e. Can we connect sip trunking back to back?

we have used SIP trunks to link 2 x Mitel 3300 CX before (they communicated with each other over a Cisco IPSec VPN)

we purchased 2 x SIP trunk licenses, for each system, to support 2 concurrent calls

happy to help further

Fissure - Thanks for the response. I haven't touched sip trunking so I was uncertain that it could be used this way. Thanks for the confirmation. I suspect there will not be an easier or cheaper way so I may need to tap your shoulder sometime soon.

Hi KWB

Also done SIP trunking back to back between 2 X Mitels numerous times If the CX or CXi's per purchased with a small business bundle they should have 2 sip trunk licences anyway. If not only £70 each. Labour to set up is only an hour really. Have done a doc with some basic instructions if you like?

MitelMatt - Thanks for the offer. I may take you up on it as I have yet to touch SIP trunking. That being said, I'll probably give it a go by myself first. Learn more that way.

Also thanks for the additional confirmation on the concept.

KwbMitel,

We often sell multi-site systems with SIP trunk connectivity as IP Networking can drive the smaller players out of the market.
Although IP Networking would always be my preference in some cases SIP trunking is all a customer requires.
In regards to configuration, it is very straight forward.

Ok, it's starting to look like this was obvious. Nice to have feedback. I'll let you know how it works out. The customer has to agree to my costs of which labaour looks like the biggest. We'll see how it goes.

Mitelmatt it would really be nice if you could send me your guide.. I cant seem to find it under the mitel knowledge base..

So I'm going to have to give this a go today. What gets setup on the receiving side for the trunk to connect to. Is the connection Trunk to trunk, Trunk to Sip user, or Trunk to Controller?

Network Element

Select Other, add IP address of remote controller, check SIP peer add details. Modify Trunk attributes form to absord zero digits, complete SIP peer profile form, add ARS and route. Do same for other end. Sorry for scant information got to run, let me know if you need more information.

Humbling challenge.

I am stuck on step 1.

I cannot create a SIP peer profile, it keeps telling me value out of bounds but does not tell me which value is out of bounds. Additionally, the help files say I should have a pulldown to select from a list of controllers programmed in my Netwrok Elements form. This does not appear, I only have an option to choose FQDN or IP for the local controller.

In your SIP Peer Profile form did you change the SMDR tag (leave as default for now) and did you modify the maximum simultaneous calls to reflect the amount of SIP trunk licenses you have on the system.
Also select IP Address not FQDN.
If you created the Network Element for the remote system as "Other" (Network Element Form, ADD, Type = Other, IP address of remote system, check SIP Peer and populate) it should then be available in the SIP Peer Profile form as a drop down box under the SIP Peer Profile Label. Leave other variable as default in the SIP Peer Profile form.
Once that is done add ARS digits and route. Repeat steps outline on remote system.
Maintenance command SIP Link State All will verify if link is up or down.

It is probably the number of trunks
By default it is 400 you need to set this up to the licence maximum

Share what you know - Learn what you don't

It was 2 things. Number of trunks and setting the controller type to "other" and selecting the SIP peer option. The network between sites is not routing properly so this is as far as I can go today. MitelAU, you've earned a star.

Hi All,

Have read through the above with great interest, some really good stuff as usual. I have implemented SIP trunks between 2 3300 running release 9, however when i call from switch a to switch b switch b display shows the calling extension name and number, but switch a only shows the extension number that I dialled. Do you know if there is a way round this or is it fixed in a newer release of software ? I have enabled "PRIVATE SIP TRUNK" on both peer profiles which sorts the cadence and the name/number display at the called set but no luck on the calling set.

Thanks again

It would be my expectation in this scenario that the called site would receive Name and Number but that the calling site only see the number that is dialed. There would not be handshaking to exchange name/number as there would be on a MSDN networking link.

My expectaions have been wrong however.

MitelMatt, I too would appreciate your document if possible....

tony at advanced-comms*co*uk (I guess you know what to change.)

mitelmania, I think that's pretty much the way it works. have seen this too before.

kwbmitel i guess by now you've got the solution. my five cents though, SIP T is the only way. as one of the other guys said, we too use this at the lower end of the market where least cost routing and just basic on net calls are desired.
