I was wondering do you really need to purchase a 3550 switch to prepare for the ccie exam or can a lesser switch, i.e. 2950,3524,3548.This will be for my studies.I was in this forum and saw a response that says that the 3550 is at the end of sale, is this true?. Thanks

it would be wise to get a 3550 due to the fact that it supports layer 3 functionality.. all the other switches you spoke of don't.

Thanks buckweet but have you heard that the 3550 is an end of sale item?. I should have copied it and posted it here but i read it in the swich forum

You are right the 3550 is end of life (along with the 2950 as well I think). The problem is the Cisco courses and exams are currently based around the 3550 (& 2950) so it is a good idea to have some exposure to them.
The current switch technology (standalone) seems to be the 2970, 3560 & 3750 (as well as the recent 2960) and all these are based on the same base technology, therefore configuration is very similar between them. In reality the 3550 command set is very similar to the 3750, only the QoS features are to be different from a configuration point of view.
I am lucky as I have a 2950, a 3550 and a 3750.......

Would you like to sell any of them?. Other than ebay is there a website i could visit for any of the aformentioned equipment? Its the holiday season and money is a lil tight. Also do you know generally when cisco deems an item end of sale, how soon after do they change that end of sale item from the exams? (3550) if you know.

I think it all depends on customer demand. I get regular emails from Cisco as I work for a partner, they always state that if customer demand is high enough they will continue almost any product....

Sorry none are for sale unfortunately. eBay is where I got mine from.
